Attendance FAQs

Do I need to phone into school each day my child is absent?

Yes we do expect a phone call every day. Please call the attendance absence line, 01332 772706, option 1, before 10am if your child is going to be absent that day.

What is your protocol if my child has sickness and diarrhoea?

If your child has sickness OR diarrhoea we would advise 24 hours from the last bout of their symptoms, however if they are suffering with both sickness AND diarrhoea we would ask that you keep your child off school for a 48 hour period.

What if my child has a medical appointment during the school day?

Where possible we ask that appointments be made out of school time however if this is not possible please contact school at least 24 hours in advance to inform us if your child will be coming in late or leaving early due to an appointment.  All appointments require medical proof. If proof is not provided the absence will NOT be authorised. Absences, whether authorised or not, will impact on your child’s percentage attendance.

What will happen if my child is ill?

Depending upon the illness, parent may be contacted and a decision will be made about whether student should be sent home.

How long can my child be off school ill before I need to provide medical evidence?

We will not authorise absences after 3 days of illness without medical proof.

What is acceptable medical evidence?

We will accept a doctor’s appointment card, which contains an official surgery stamp, a text message or if your child is prescribed medication, the label off the medication.

What happens if my child is late to school?

If your child is late to school, without good reason, they will be issued with a 30 minute detention the following day. All students should be in their form room/assembly/lesson by 8.40am, if they are not they will be classed as late and will need to sign in at the attendance office. Your child will only be excused from a detention if they have attended a medical appointment, have permission from School or we have received a phone call from a parent/carer.

How many days holiday can my child take during term time?

Parents should not take students on holiday in term time. All holidays taken in term time will be unauthorised and a fine may be issued. Fines apply per parent, per child. Payment is £120 if paid within 28 days reduced to £60 if paid within 21 days (following receipt of fine which will be issued by the Local Authority)  If not paid the matter will be placed before the court.

Will a religious event be authorised?

School will authorise if the day is exclusively set apart for religious observance by the religious body to which the parents belong. Where necessary schools will seek advice from the parents’ religious body to confirm.
